Surface Sealing – Recommendation for Subsequent Application

Transparent water droplet on a blue plant material layer

Our surfaces leave our production facility without any sealing – in other words, “pure nature.” In order to expand the range of applications for our surfaces – and since our main focus is on naturalness and sustainability – we carried out tests with natural sealants in collaboration with ADLER-Werk Lackfabrik in Schwaz, Austria. The aim of the tests was to improve abrasion resistance and water resistance.

We therefore recommend a selected product for splash water protection: ADLER Legno Oil

To provide natural surfaces with splash water protection, ORGANOID recommends the application of the natural Legno Oil from ADLER. The natural surfaces are supplied untreated. The recommended Legno Oil must be applied after installation and can be purchased directly from the ADLER webshop. All distributors are listed here.

This user-friendly oil for interior use is colorless, has very good penetration properties, a pleasant feel, and very good water resistance. The food-safe Legno Oil – based on selected plant-based raw materials – has a characteristic odor, which reduces the fragrance intensity of the ORGANOID natural surface.

Resistance test results with Legno Oil

The ORGANOID natural surfaces WILDSPITZE light on flax fleece, ALMWIESE, MOOS LIGHT GREEN and ROSE PETALS were tested in a procedure based on ÖNORM 1605-15 in accordance with EN 12720. The test results confirm good resistance – after two applications of Legno Oil – to substances such as cleaning agents, disinfectants, red wine, water, oils, coffee, tea and more. It can be assumed that comparable ORGANOID natural surfaces with raw materials of the same origin and the same properties will show similar resistance. Application of Legno Oil with ORGANOID natural surfaces

The oil should be applied twice to the already wallpapered surface. It is important to observe the drying times. Thanks to the oil-based surface protection, the materials can also be wiped and cleaned with a damp or wet cloth. The abrasion resistance of the material can also be improved by the oil.

Sealed ORGANOID natural wallpaper

Recommended procedure:

  1. Install the ORGANOID wallpaper in accordance with the processing instructions and drying time.
  2. Apply Legno Oil evenly to the processed and dried surface using a roller or brush.
  3. Approx. 24 hours drying time
  4. Apply a second coat of Legno Oil to the dried surface.
  5. At least 72 hours drying time

The nature of the material affects the oil consumption and coverage. We recommend carrying out a preliminary test coating in an appropriate size. When applying the oil, the manufacturer’s instructions must be observed. Please refer to the technical data sheet of ADLER Legno Oil 50880 ff:

Appearance after two coats of oil

In principle, Legno Oil is suitable for various materials in the current collection. The surfaces become darker after two coats of oil. Due to the different natural fibers and backing materials, the oil protection changes the appearance and coloration.

In the case of ORGANOID hay décors with premium application thickness, almost no visible changes can be observed.

BERGWIESE: Natural finish vs. two coats of Legno Oil

WILDSPITZE MARGERITEN: Natural finish vs. two coats of Legno Oil

The oil-based surface treatment causes the processed raw materials to become darker, resulting in rich and intense colors.
