Our Carbon Footprint: What the Life Cycle Assessment Actually Says

This page used to say that organoid products were climate-positive. We no longer say that. Not because the product changed, but because we now have a verified life cycle assessment — and it calculates differently from the way we calculated back then.

The figure in question

For WILDSPITZE on flax fleece an Environmental Product Declaration to ISO 14025 and EN 15804+A2 has been in place since June 2026, registered with EPD Global as NEPD-11780-11780-2 and valid until 31 May 2031. It states:

Why the carbon stored in the fibres does not turn the calculation around

That was our old argument: alpine hay and flax take up carbon as they grow, more than production emits. The assessment shows that was only half the calculation.

The uptake appears in the EPD as −0.768 kg CO2e during production. At end of life, in waste processing, the same carbon comes back out at +0.933 kg. Net, there is no credit left but a small positive. The uptake is a temporary item, not a permanent one.

The EPD even has a figure for this: GWP-IOBC, the value assuming the biogenic carbon is released immediately. It is 2.28 kg CO2e for production.

And module D?

The table shows a minus for D. Those are credits from recovery and energy recycling — the EPD lists them explicitly under „Credits and burdens outside the system boundaries“. Under EN 15804 they are reported separately and are not deducted from the total. Deducting them anyway would give 2.11 — still a positive figure.

What remains

Around 2.5 kg CO2e per square metre across the whole life cycle. For a wall covering that is a good figure. It is simply not zero.

What we can still say, because it is documented: we purchase 100 % certified green electricity and manufacture in Fließ, Tyrol. The full EPD is available on request through the download area.

A note on scope: the EPD covers WILDSPITZE on flax fleece. For other surfaces the figures are in a similar range, but this is the one that has been measured.
